Project overview and background
The Idaho Transportation Department is constructing a new State Highway 52 Bridge in Payette over the Snake River, which connects Idaho and Oregon.
Built in 1953, the 72-year-old current bridge no longer meets modern highway bridge standards for motorists, including freight haulers who transport produce across the region.
The bridge barriers, width, and surface will be improved in coordination with the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Construction phasing
ITD and ODOT heard from emergency responders, freight haulers and the community that a full closure would not be feasible during construction and could impact response time and access.
In response, bridge construction will be in two steps, meaning a new bridge will be constructed one-half at a time.
Construction will take approximately two years.

Staging location
During construction, materials and equipment will be staged at the north end of Centennial Park. This will allow for efficient construction of the bridge.
ITD is working with the City of Payette to minimize disruptions and maintain public access to the south end of the park and the widely used boat ramp.
Temporary construction structure
Before the bridge is constructed, crews will install a temporary structure to help workers and machines work safely and efficiently. The structure will act as a work platform that will be removed once the bridge is finished.
Step 1 construction
The existing bridge will remain fully open and there will be no change for the traveling public. The first half of the new bridge will be built just north of and next to the old bridge. One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction during construction, except for limited closures. We anticipate this construction step will take about one year to complete.

Step 2 construction
The bridge crossing will be down to one lane. Temporary traffic signals will allow traffic to alternately travel one direction at a time. Traffic can expect some travel delay. Information will be publicized as construction nears. We anticipate this construction step will take about one year to complete.

Bridge design details
The new bridge will include:
- Two 12-foot lanes
- Two 8-foot shoulders
- New deck and guardrail
- Rebuilt approaches on both sides of the bridge
